On Monday night, Neill had the great honour of carrying the Queen’s Baton. Neill describes it as the quickest 30 seconds of his life and says the anticipation, anxieties of the build up were worth it.
On the evening, Neill like many other of the bearers was anxious about dropping the baton or running too slow but was comforted by the organisers who told him to enjoy the moment, take his time to look at the baton and embrace the atmosphere. Neill states that when he had the baton in his hand he was overwhelmed by the honour, especially with the crowd cheering him on. He just found the whole experience amazing and wanted to carry it forever.
Neill would say to anyone with a long term condition to have aspirations and work towards achieving them. It never crossed his mind he would carry the Queen’s Baton- in fact it didn’t seem real until it was in his hands and he considers it to be one of the best things he has ever done.
‘No matter who you are, you can always do it.’ Neill Sloan.
